CVS took pharmacy robbery prevention seriously, rolling out time delay pharmacy safes to their locations across 45 states and completing the rollout to all of their retail pharmacies. The safes, which are often targeted for the narcotics and opioids contained inside, are equipped with time delays programmed to prevent the safe from being opened immediately on request.
And it worked. According to CVS, the installed pharmacy safes resulted in a 50 percent decrease in robberies. And they weren't alone in the fight. Walgreens announced a similar commitment to implement time delay safes across nearly all of its locations. Time delay safes plus prominently displayed signage indicating the safes are in use are helping protect pharmacists, employees, and customers from dangerous robberies. Each safe has a time delay function that cannot be overridden. When an order is put in for opioids or other controlled substances, there is a wait between the pharmacy worker's request and the opening of the safe. The objective is to dissuade potential robbers, who won't want to stick around any longer and risk getting caught.
