Hollon HS-310 & HS-500: 2-Hour Home Safes Compared

Hollon HS-310 and HS-500 2-Hour Home Safes Review

Two of Hollon's most popular home safes: same 2-hour, 1,850°F fire rating, different footprints and different lock options.

The Hollon HS-310 and HS-500 are two of the smallest safes in Hollon's HS home-safe series, and both are strong choices for homeowners who want serious fire protection without stepping up to office-safe pricing. They share a 2-hour fire rating tested at 1,850°F, Portland-cement insulation between the inner and outer steel walls, and Hollon's Lifetime Fire Warranty.

Each model comes in two lock configurations:

  • E designation: digital electronic keypad for quick-access entry.
  • D designation: mechanical dial combination lock paired with a key lock (both required to open).

Pick the size first, then the lock. Here's how the two models compare.

Hollon HS-310: The Compact Letter-Size Safe

The HS-310 is the smaller of the two. Wider than it is tall, sized for a stack of letter-size documents in a folder plus a few small jewelry boxes, passports, hard drives, or a small amount of cash. Small enough to live in a closet, cabinet drawer, or office cubby.

Hollon HS-500: The Upright Legal-Size Safe

The HS-500 flips to an upright, tall-and-narrow orientation. That change lets you fit standing file folders, binders, full-size envelopes, stacked jewelry boxes, and full-size passports without folding or layering. Roughly twice the interior capacity of the HS-310.

Why a 2-Hour, 1,850°F Fire Rating Actually Matters

Most consumer fireproof safes are rated for 30 to 45 minutes at 1,400 to 1,550°F. The HS series ups that to 2 hours at 1,850°F. That's meaningfully more conservative than the typical residential fire, which peaks around 1,100 to 1,500°F and is usually suppressed within 20 to 30 minutes.

The extra margin matters if you live somewhere with slower fire response, if you're storing genuinely irreplaceable family records, or if you want the documents to come out of a worst-case fire intact rather than borderline. Both the HS-310 and HS-500 come backed by Hollon's Lifetime Fire Warranty: if the safe is damaged in a documented house fire, Hollon replaces it.

Which One Should You Buy?

Three quick decisions:

  • Choose the HS-310 if you're mostly protecting a small stack of important papers plus a few small valuables, or if you're a renter or apartment dweller who wants a portable safe for the next move. It'll live in a closet or drawer.
  • Choose the HS-500 if you're storing standing binders, full-size document folders, a passport pouch for the family, a small handgun with ammo, or want roughly twice the interior room.
  • Choose the E (electronic) if you value quick daily access. Choose the D (dial + key) if you value no-batteries reliability, dual-control redundancy, or want to split the combo and key between two family members.

If you need more capacity than the HS-500 gives you, the same 2-hour, 1,850°F protection continues up the HS series in larger sizes: HS-530, HS-610, and up into the HS office models (HS-750, HS-880, HS-1000, and beyond). Browse the full Hollon lineup or call us for a size recommendation.
