5 Ways to Hide a Wall Safe (Beyond the Movie Trope)

We've all seen the wall-safe-behind-the-tiny-painting trope in movies. It turns out that trope is one of the more effective real-world hiding spots too.

A wall safe only works if a would-be burglar doesn't spot it. The good news: burglars are working against the clock and rarely have time to check every wall in the house. The better news: there are more concealment options than most people realize. Here are five that actually work in a real home.

5 Ways to Hide a Wall Safe

Behind a heavy piece of furniture

A piano, a bookcase, a tall dresser, a couch: anything a lone burglar can't move quickly. This is one of the most common concealment strategies because it's simple and immediately effective. The trade-off is that furniture is hard for you to move too, so if you need frequent access to your safe, pick something you can slide (a bookcase on discreet furniture glides works well) rather than something you have to shove.

Behind a mounted mirror

A wall-mounted mirror sits flush against the wall, doesn't draw a second look, and comes off in seconds when you need in. Bathrooms and hallways are the obvious spots, but a bedroom vanity mirror or a full-length mirror in a closet works even better because burglars rarely lift decorative mirrors looking for a safe.

Inside a closet, behind hanging clothes

The single most common real-world spot for a wall safe. Bedroom, home office, or hall closet, tucked between the studs and covered by hanging clothes or a fabric hanging organizer. Burglars often do a quick sweep of the drawers and skip past the coat rail entirely. You still get eye-level access when you need it, because the clothes just slide sideways.

Behind a bookcase

The most fun option, and one of the most effective. A full-height bookcase in front of the safe works. A better version: glue a row of old hardcover books together, hollow out the pages, and cover just the protrusion of the safe. From two feet away it looks like books. From five feet away it looks like a library.

Behind a painting or gallery wall

The classic, and it works. Ask yourself: if you were a burglar working against the clock, would you take the time to pry every framed piece off every wall? No one does. A gallery wall with five or six pieces makes it even harder because there's no single "obvious" painting to check. And unlike the furniture option, a painting lifts off in a second when you need in.
