Paper starts to char above 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the interior threshold most residential and small-business fire safes are built to. Electronic media, external hard drives, SSDs, USB drives, LTO backup tapes, CDs and DVDs, and film archives are far more heat-sensitive, and permanent data loss can start above 125 degrees. A paper-rated fire safe that holds your backup drive alongside your tax records protects the paper but destroys the drive.
