Protect your valuables from moisture damage
Since most safes are not waterproof, condensation can build up inside damaging the safes contents.
Silica (desiccant) bags absorb moisture and can keep your valuables protected from mold, mildew, corrosion and water damage. Placing your safe in a moisture-prone area, such as a garage, can increase the chances of moisture damage to the contents of the safe.
Silica gel is the most commonly used material in desiccant bags because it has the highest absorption capacity of commercial desiccants. Silica can also absorb up to 40% of its weight in moisture.
Our team at SafeandVaultStore.com recommend that depending on the items you want to protect, silica bags can be used in place of a dehumidifier which can damage your valuables by warming and over-drying the air inside your safe.
For example, guns with wood stocks can be damaged and cracked if the air is to hot and dry. Make sure to select the proper amount of silica for the size of your safe. A large gun safe may need four bags (16 oz.) to properly regulate moisture in the air, while a small burglar fire safe many only need two (8 oz.).
Reuse Silica Gel Desiccant Bags
Silica bags should be heated in the oven at a low temperature once a year to dry out the silica. You can even lay them out in the sun on a warm day to dry them out. Silica is also non-toxic and non-flammable, although the bag may be flammable.
