Steelhead Outdoors: American Craftsmanship in Modular Gun Safes

Steelhead Outdoors: American Craftsmanship in Modular Gun Safes

Rooted in Minnesota

Steelhead Outdoors was founded in 2016 by engineers and longtime friends Charlie Pehrson and Corey Meyer of Minnesota. They had been searching for a high quality, adaptable, USA made gun safe and turned up uninspiring results.

That's when the collaboration of their minds forged an innovative solution, the Nomad series of modular gun safes.

The Safe You Want, Where You Want It

One of the primary benefits of this safe, beyond just being a well-built product made in the US, is the fact that it's modular. Modular Gun Safes ship in multiple pieces intended to be assembled by the end user in its final resting place. This allows your new safe into areas that otherwise would have been tricky with a heavy safe, such as upper-level apartments, basements, smaller bedrooms, and closets. This also makes it a great option for someone who may be relocating regularly, as you can disassemble it for easy moving and reassemble it in its new residence.

Assembly Is a Breeze

In the case of the Steelhead Nomad Gun Safes, they ship in five separate boxes containing all the safes sides, the door, interior accessories and all the hardware/tools necessary for assembly.

My coworker and I were able to move and assemble the Nomad 26 Gun Safe into its desired resting place in under an hour with nothing more than the included tools.

The door will be the heaviest single piece in any of these modular safe kits, ranging roughly 100 pounds on the Nomad 26 up to around 200 pounds on the larger Nomad 38 models. Each panel is secured using a number of included bolts that are only accessible from the inside the safe, meaning there is no concern in regard to security.

The door sits on innovative adjustable hinges which make mounting and alignment issues a thing of the past. Once it's assembled, the interior can be configured to your liking, and you can begin enjoying your new gun safe.

Built to Protect, No Matter What

The Nomad Modular Gun Safes are built tough with double wall construction comprised of a 12-gauge exterior and a 20 gauge interior along with a heavy duty seven-gauge door plate. Massive 4" locking plates engage the full 1/2" solid steel door jamb, and a full-length locking bar provides protection from attacks on the hinges.

These safes feature 30-minute fire ratings provided by a dual stage system tested to 1200 degrees F and have Palusol expanding door seals for added protection from smoke damage.

Lock options include a tried-and-true Group 2 mechanical combination lock or an ultra-reliable Sargent and Greenleaf Titan Direct Drive electronic lock for fast access when you need it.

Big or Small, Steelhead's Got You Covered

Nomad 26 Interior Shot

No matter your storage requirements, Steelhead has a solution. Their safes come in three sizes, the smallest being the Nomad 26, configurable with a 6, 12, or 15 gun capacity, still leaving room for other accessories and valuables.

The mid-size Nomad 32 can store up to 19 long guns and the largest model, the Nomad 38, has a 34 long gun capacity for the serious collector.

Each of these safes has the option for a deluxe interior kit, which adds rubberized floor mats, rechargeable motion activated lights and gear panels to the inside of the door allowing the use of Molle accessories.

Inspired by Our National Parks

Another feature that makes Steelhead stand out is their "Custom Standard" durable powder coat finishes, each of which is inspired by Americas National Parks. These textured finishes include captivating colors such as Badlands Brown, Arctic White, Zion Bronze, Glacier Green and more.

The interior and exterior finish can be chosen separately, and the handle/logo will be finished to match the interior which ties the design together.

Steelhead Rustic Finish

They also offer a "Rustic" finish, giving the safe a worn but tough look, as well as a "Recon" black finish to keep things clean and tactical.

Small Company with Big Solutions

If you've been shopping for safes, you've likely seen numerous companies making the same types of products claiming theirs is "The Best". Steelhead has innovated with their modular product design provided a solution to a serious problem we face in the gun safe industry; "How do I move a heavy gun safe?"

These innovations allow a new market of gun owners to secure their collections in a well-built, USA-made safe they can be proud of, regardless of what room they're installing it in and without worry of having to move it later.

FAQs

Q: What's the heaviest part of the safe?

A: The door will be the heaviest part of any safe, weighing approximately 1/3rd the total weight of the safe.

Q: What if someone cuts the hinges off my safe?

A: Safes have deadbolts or a deadbar on the hinge side to prevent removal of the door in the case the hinges are removed.

Q: What is a modular safe?

A: A modular safe is a safe that ships unassembled so that it is easier to get into an apartment or home

Q: Is an electronic or dial lock better?

A: We don't like to push people in either direction. The level of security will be the same with either a dial or electronic lock. It really comes down to personal preference. A dial lock can last longer, but an electronic lock is easier to use.
