Pharmacy Safes That Meet DEA Requirements

The DEA has specific requirements for storing controlled substances (Schedule I through V). Every schedule has to be locked in a substantially constructed cabinet or safe, and the exact spec depends on the schedule you're storing.

Reference the full DEA storage requirements in 21 CFR 1301.72 for details.

Schedule I & II Drug Storage

For Schedule I and II drugs (the highest-restriction categories), the DEA requires a heavier build and a specific lock spec:

  • Minimum UL-certified TL-30 rated safe
  • Minimum 750 pounds. If under 750 lbs, the safe must be bolted or cemented to the floor.
  • UL Listed Group 1R dial combination lock (30 man-minutes surreptitious entry resistance, 10 man-minutes forced entry, 20 man-hours against manipulation, 20 man-hours against radiological attack)
  • Digital locks do not meet the Group 1R requirement for Schedule I/II

Schedule III, IV & V Drug Storage

For lower-restriction schedules (III, IV, and V), the DEA requires a safe with a minimum of 11 gauge steel construction. Our narcotic and pharmaceutical safes meet or exceed this requirement, and give you more flexibility on lock type (key, digital, or audit trail) than the Group 1R requirement for Schedule I/II.

Lock Options for Pharmacy Safes

Match the lock to the schedule you're storing. Group 1R dial is required for Schedule I/II. For Schedule III through V you have more choices.
